Man Bitten on Penis by Venomous Redback Spider after He Sat Down to Use the Toilet
A man has admitted himself to hospital after sustaining a bite from a venomous redback spider on his penis.
The 21-year-old 'tradie' was using a portaloo on a building site in Sydney, Australia, when he was bitten on his genitalia, reports the Advertiser.
Although paramedics were called to the scene, he reportedly managed to make his own way to hospital according to a local ambulance service spokesperson.
The hospital confirmed to the Advertiser that a man had been admitted to the emergency department.
He is said to be in a stable condition and is expected to be released later today.
Redback spiders are especially common in urban and residential areas, according to the Australian Museum .
Bites occur frequently, with more than 250 people being administered antivenom each year.
The museum site states: "Only the female bite is dangerous. They can cause serious illness and have caused deaths. However, since Redback Spiders rarely leave their webs, humans are not likely to be bitten unless a body part such as a hand is put directly into the web."
"Common early symptoms are pain (which can become severe), sweating (always including local sweating at bite site), muscular weakness, nausea and vomiting."
The museum adds that antivenom is available and no deaths have occurred since its introduction.
