See How explosion nearly wreaked havoc in Lagos

Tragedy was on Wednesday, March 23, averted in Aguda area of Ogba, Lagos when a generator caught fire in a supermarket at Imole Oluwa’s house.
The building which housed the supermarket contains several offices and was untouched by the inferno which occurred at about 11pm on Wednesday. Godday Eleojo, who visited the scene of the incident, gathered that the inferno started when every store and office had closed for the day. A source who witnessed the scene told our correspondent that the supermarket had closed for the day, adding that the fully fueled generator was locked inside the supermarket after being used all day.

“The generator which was hot having worked the whole day, was locked inside the supermarket. And in no time, we saw flames from inside the supermarket.

“Luckily for every one, those who locked the supermarket had not gone home. So we had to open the supermarket and carefully drew out the generator with fire on the tank and body, before we made attempts to put out the fire,” the eyewitness said.

Traders and passerby were calling for help while the fire continued to burn and about three fire extinguishers were exhausted as soaps and water were also used by traders in an attempt to put off the fire. Although no life was lost, attempts to put off the fire was proved abortive until after the generator had been burnt beyond repair.
