Daphne Williams, 72, suffered multiple wounds on Monday.
A man, 44, named locally as her son Steven, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
Mrs Williams, of Chipping Norton, Oxon, was treated at the scene and transferred to Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital where she is in a serious but stable condition.
Forensic teams dressed in white suits were seen going in and out of Mrs Williams' semi-detached sand-bricked house on Hailey Avenue.
Mr Williams' end-of-terrace bungalow was cordoned off with blue and white police tape.
Neighbour Graham Hall said: “I know Daphne very well, we look out for each other and each other' houses when we are away.
“My wife came in about 5pm and said the police were in the street and we then realised it was next door.
“I feel awful knowing something happened and I didn’t hear it. I would have gone in.”
Her son was said to have suffered head injuries in an accident when he was younger.
A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said: "We are appealing for witnesses following an attempted murder in Chipping Norton.
"At around 5pm on Monday police received a report that a woman in a property had sustained injuries.
"Officers attended Hailey Avenue and located the victim, who is aged in her seventies, who had sustained stab wounds."
Senior investigating officer, Detective Inspector Larry Johnson, said: "I would like to appeal to anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area at around the time of the incident, or anyone who has any information, which could assist inquiries to speak to police.
"A woman has sustained serious injuries and detectives are investigating to establish the circumstances."
Police community support officers were seen patrolling the area, offering reassurance to the community.
