Neighbours living on the quite residential street said the family had been "beside themselves with worry".
Neighbours living on the quiet residential road said the family had been "beside themselves with worry" since a stranger "came in off the street" and took the baby.
Norman Stokes, 69, said: "Nothing like this has ever happened around here before and I've been here a long time.
"The police have been around all afternoon asking questions. It is very worrying and I hope he is found soon safe and well."
Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, added: "They have not lived there for that long I don't think.
"The mum is beside herself with worry. One of the officers told my neighbour it was a stranger who came in off the street and just took him. Just like that
Another local resident James Worall, 54, said: "This isn't the sort of area you would expect something like this to happen.
"There's been the odd problem with drugs but nothing serious, certainly not to this extent. The family are out of their minds with worry."
One neighbour, who also wished to remain anonymous, added: "You could hear them wailing afterwards. It was a noise I don't want to ever hear again. It was harrowing.
"I can't even imagine the pain and worry they are feeling at the moment. There were lots of them at the house earlier. I could just hear the sound of hysterical crying.
"The place has been crawling with officers but there has been no sign of this woman.
"She does not match the description of anyone I have ever seen around here."
The police spokesman added: "If anyone has any information at all please call police on 101 quoting incident number 406s of Wednesday 24 February."
